What is Nano PC
Nano-ITX boards measure 12 × 12 cm (4.7 × 4.7 in), and are fully integrated, very low power consumption motherboards with many uses, but targeted at smart digital entertainment devices such as DVRs, set-top boxes, media centers, car PCs, and thin devices.
Processor Functions
The CPU performs most of the computations and functions that allow a computer to run its operating system and any installed programs. In some computers, the processor handles all data for the system, while in others, add-in cards, such as graphics cards, offload some of the work to speed up the system. Aside from work that relies on a graphics card, the speed of the processor is the most important factor in determining a computer's speed.
Motherboard Functions
A motherboard has numerous slots and connectors, and it serves as the backbone of a computer system. Every piece of hardware in a computer connects to the motherboard, and it relays data between these components. Many motherboards also include chipsets for processing audio data, removing the need for a separate sound card. In older computers, motherboards sometimes contained graphics processing hardware, but today's computers use either separate graphics cards or graphics technology built into the processor.
Processor Compatibility
Every processor has a socket type that must match the motherboard's CPU socket -- Mismatched processors will not fit into an incompatible motherboard. This effectively limits the upgradability of CPUs, since developers create new CPU sockets every few years. If you want to upgrade a computer with an out-of-date socket, you will need to replace the motherboard – a task as difficult as creating a new computer – or buy an older-model CPU that fits the motherboard.
Other Compatibility
The majority of other components in a computer, such as hard drives and RAM, also require compatibility with a motherboard. An old IDE hard drive, for example, cannot connect to a modern motherboard with SATA drive ports. While processors do have some compatibility concerns -- certain models of RAM may not work with certain CPUs -- The motherboard determines the vast majority of parts compatibility. In essence, you need to select all the components in your computer based on your motherboard.
CPU Slot
The CPU is often called the brains of a computer because it is the hardware that carries out instructions from software by using math, input/output commands and logic. The CPU slot (also known as a CPU socket) is where the processor is stored on a computer's motherboard. To replace a CPU you will need to raise the socket by lifting a small lever on the side of the socket; Then you can gently pull out the CPU hardware. Replace the old CPU with a new one by aligning your new CPU with the socket, gently placing it in (do not push) and then flipping the socket lever to secure it.
RAM Slot
Random access memory (RAM) is data storage hardware on your computer's motherboard. Despite the name, RAM does not actually "remember" anything when a computer is turned off. Programs must be saved on the hard drive or another storage device. In practical terms, RAM determines how many programs can run at once and how large the programs can be. Computers cannot run without RAM installed. They often come packaged with multiple strips located in RAM slots on the motherboard that are easily removable and replaceable. Upgrading RAM will improve the speed of your computer.

PCI Slot
The Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) slot is a slot for expansion devices. Most desktop computers come with several PCI expansion slots. PCI slots are used for a variety of devices: Modems, network cards, television tuners, radio tuners, video cards and sound cards, among others. Most computers today have several of these cards already built in. For computers that do not, these expansion devices provide additional functionality to a computer, making it possible for essential functions in a business such as wireless Internet connectivity.
PCI Express Slot
The PCI Express slot, like the PCI slot, is used for expansion cards. PCI Express allows for higher transfer speeds than PCI and is therefore preferred for graphics cards. The PCI Express has replaced the Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) in most computers as the primary slot for graphics cards. Many newer programs, such as Adobe's popular photo and video editors, rely more on an advanced graphics card to process data. Upgrading your graphics card can improve performance markedly.
Motherboard components
CPU Socket
This is where the processor is installed and connects to the motherboard, providing the brainpower for the computer.
RAM Slots
These slots are the place to put your computer's memory – Which provides temporary storage for data the CPU is actively using.
Expansion Slots
Whether you want to upgrade your PC's graphics or sound, these slots allow for additional hardware components like GPUs, sound cards and network cards.
Storage Connectors
The motherboard features connectors such as SATA and M.2. These allow for the attachment of storage devices like hard drives and SSDs.
Power Connectors
These connectors supply power from the PSU (Power Supply Unit) to the motherboard and its components.
Bios/uefi Chip
This chip stores the firmware that takes care of booting up the computer during start up and giving you a display where you can adjust system settings.
Cmos Battery
The cmos battery powers to the bios/uefi chip, keeping system settings where you left them and allowing the real-time clock to run when the computer is powered off.
Chipset
The chipset manages the flow of data between the cpu and other components.
What To Consider When Buying A Motherboard
Form Factor
Initially you’ll need to select a form factor. ATX motherboards are common, as is micro ATX (although these are smaller in size and reduce the number of expansions slots). When you’re buying a new motherboard and not sure what size will fit, you can always measure your old motherboard and compare it with different sizes. The ATX board is popular, as it has the addition of more expansion slots, which can be useful.
Processor Socket
After choosing a form factor you’ll need to choose a processor socket. There has been different types of sockets used in the past however three are only applicable today. These are LGA, PGA and BGA. Intel uses LGA, whilst AMD use PGA. BGA sockets aren’t as popular as the latter because these are permanently bonded to the motherboard so they cannot be serviced or upgraded. Depending what type of socket you have on your motherboard, it will determine what processor you can buy.this you will probably need to consider what CPU you want first, then buy your motherboard.
RAM (Random Access Memory)
Next up, RAM, short for Random Access Memory. Fundamentally the motherboard you buy will determine the amount and type of RAM you can have. Therefore it’s worth being mindful of this before making a decision buying a motherboard.we would recommend choosing a motherboard that can accommodate at least 16 GB, even though if you don’t plan to buy that much initially, you have the option to use this memory later. In addition, look for a board that offers 4 or more memory slots. This means you can install 2 RAM modules to begin and you will have spare room for memory upgrades in future.
PCI Slots
A PCI slot is a connection or port that is located on the motherboard. They have been the standard type of expansions slot for years and they allow expansion cards to be connected. Depending on how you plan to use your computer, you’ll need to consider if your motherboard has the slots to suit your requirements. If you’re a gamer, you’ll want to have at least one full speed PCI express x16 slot and you’ll need multiple of those, if you want to connect multiple cards. Motherboards also offer standard PCI slots and smaller PCI express slots for other cards, like sound cards, Wi-Fi adaptors and other connectivity expansions.
Features
If you buy a motherboard with features already built in, you don’t have to worry about buying additional expansion cards. A more common feature which is usual included on the majority of motherboards is on-board audio. However this is usually only suitable for mid-range speakers. It is worth noting that better motherboards often bundle Wi-Fi and Bluetooth features as well, but you’ll have to spend more cash for these features. Nevertheless they will reduce the need for expansion cards.
SATA
When considering buying a motherboard you may to need consider the number of SATA ports you’ll need. Each SATA port allows you to connect an optical drive and storage drives, like a SSD or HDD.it’s important to make sure your motherboard has all the SATA ports you need for all of your drives. It is also worth noting that you need to make sure your motherboard offers the SATA 6 gigabytes standard, which is also known as SATA 3.0. Furthermore, you might need to consider peripheral connections, for example a USB 3.0.
Voltage Regulation in the Motherboard
Computer power supplies output 12 volts, but this is too much for a CPU, which, according to Texas Instruments typically needs about 1.2 volts. Exceeding this can damage the CPU. To prevent this, Voltage Regulation Modules (VRMs) step down the voltage. VRMs are crucial for overclockers, as they manage the CPU's power supply.
A basic VRM circuit includes two MOSFETs (acting as switches), an inductor, and a diode. MOSFETs (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors) play a crucial role in the VRM (Voltage Regulator Module). The VRM is responsible for controlling the voltage supplied to vital components on the Motherboard, such as the CPU and graphics card.
MOSFETs in the VRM act as efficient switches, regulating the power that these components receive to ensure they operate optimally without being damaged by excessive voltage. This regulation is essential for the stability and longevity of the PC's key components.
The MOSFETs switch on and off, controlling the voltage supplied to the CPU. The inductor converts electricity into a magnetic field, and the diode prevents damage when both MOSFETs are open.MOSFETs generate heat when switching, so there's a balance to be struck between the frequency of switching and heat generation.
To ensure cleaner power, instead of faster switching MOSFETs, more MOSFETs are used. This is what's referred to as 'phases' in VRM terms. More phases mean cleaner power but also more complexity.
Motherboards are often described in terms of phases, like "eight plus two," indicating the number of phases for the CPU and RAM.
Interestingly, high-end Motherboards often have many phases and efficient components but also come with substantial VRM heat sinks, primarily for aesthetic purposes.
Mid-range boards might need better VRM cooling.for most uses, including moderate overclocking, extensive VRM cooling is not necessary.
