First, a nanocomputer is a small, fast-response computer; nanocomputers can be applied to microrobots.
Indeed, nanotechnology points to the future of computer development in the 21st century. First, experts predict that chip production technology will reach its limit in the next decade. As the number of transistors integrated on a chip approaches the limit, the performance of integrated circuits will become increasingly unstable. Second, economic factors will also bring the chip manufacturing industry to an end. It is estimated that by 2010, it will cost nearly $50 billion to build a large chip production plant. Such a huge cost is not even affordable for Intel. The cost of a chip production plant is about $2 billion.
In contrast, the cost of producing chips using nanotechnology is very low, because it does not require the construction of ultra-clean production workshops, nor does it require expensive experimental equipment and a large production team. As long as the designed molecules are combined in the laboratory, a chip can be made. Chip manufacturers will save millions of dollars in production costs, and the price of chips will drop sharply, so that daily electronic devices - even toys - can use powerful microprocessors.
Williams is confident in his research project. He said that as long as his colleagues in the laboratory work closely with scientists at UCLA and Berkeley, they will be able to develop a molecular memory chip that can hold 16 bytes (equivalent to 16 English letters) of data within the next two years. This memory chip has a grid composed of nanoscale wires, and there is a molecular "switch" at each node where the wires intersect. These switches will determine the storage and communication lines of information in the grid. The most striking thing is that this micro-wire grid and switch can be placed together in a chemical solution, allowing the switch to automatically adhere to the grid, thus eliminating the expensive production process.
